Ainsley has created several badge programs to be completed at Centre County PAWS.
Girl Scout Programs
PAWS is excited to offer programming for Girl Scout troops! The following programs have been designed by a local Girl Scout as part of her Bronze Award project.
Daisies:
5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals
(Birdbath Leadership Award)
Daisy Scouts will begin this program by taking a tour of our cat wing and medical suite. They will learn how volunteers care for the cats in the shelter and earn their birdbath award as part of their 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals Journey. Troops wanting to complete a ‘take action’ project at PAWS can work with the volunteer team to complete this step as well.
Animal Observer Badge
Daisies will tour the cat wing, medical suite, and meet our resident PAWS cats. They will learn about cat behaviors and practice observing these behaviors. Scouts will then play cat behavior bingo while interacting with our cats. Finally, girls will complete their badge by creating an adoption poster sharing details about one special cat they observed during their time at PAWS.
Brownies:
Pets Badge
Brownies will begin this badge program by meeting staff and volunteers who care for animals at PAWS. They will participate in a tour of our cat wing and medical suite to learn more about caring for cats in both a shelter environment and a home environment. With the information they learned in the first part of the program, scouts will create a book to teach others about how to care for cats and kittens as pets. Brownies will then work together to make fleece blankets for the resident cats at PAWS. Finally, the girls will deliver their blankets and some special treats to the resident cats at PAWS!
Juniors:
Digital Photography Badge
During this session, Juniors will learn about digital photography and have the opportunity to take photos of our resident cats at PAWS. After working to edit their photos, scouts will create a photo collage featuring one of our adoptable cats or kittens.
Animal Habitats Badge
Junior scouts will learn about feral cat populations in Centre County. They will learn about how feral cat populations are managed, the importance of spay/neuter programs, and the effect of overpopulation on the environment. Juniors will participate in a simulation about feral cat populations and create a poster about what they learned. Together scouts will work on creating Styrofoam houses for feral cats to use locally.
Cadettes:
Animal Helpers Badge
Cadettes will learn about emotional support animals and how pets help humans in various ways. They will learn about and help to restock the pet pantry at PAWS. Finally, Cadettes will meet with a volunteer at PAWS to learn about the process for becoming a volunteer and the various volunteer roles available at PAWS. As part of this badge, troops are invited to host a pet pantry drive for supplies to donate to our pantry!
All Levels:
Creative Calico Cats Program
Girl Scouts of all levels will show off their creative side while making some crafts for themselves and our resident cats. This program can be customized to the needs and age level of your troop!
Terrific Tabby Cats Program
Girl Scouts of all levels will begin with a tour of our cat wing and will participate cat themed activities. This program can be customized to the needs and age level of your troop as well!
Each program will last approximately 2 hours. Cost is $3 per scout and includes a custom Centre County Paws fun patch! If your troop is interested in participating in a badge program at PAWS, please email education@centrecountypaws.org.
